KINSTON, AL -- South Alabama Speedway’s Pro Late Model Viper Series came to a close late Saturday night. For the first time this season, somebody other than Bubba Pollard was standing in Victory Lane after the 100 lap race. And after post race inspection, somebody other than the driver that was standing in Victory Lane took home the winner’s trophy.
Augie Grill turned the fastest lap in qualifying, touring the 4/10ths mile oval in 15.588 seconds. Inversion put DJ VanderLey on the pole and Grill on the outside. When the green dropped, Grill got the jump on VanderLey to take the lead in turn one. Scotty Anderson followed Grill by VanderLey to move into second as the field headed down the backstretch. On the outside, VanderLey continued to slide back through the field as Korey Ruble and Bubba Pollard got past.
On lap 10, Ruble moved around Anderson to take over second. Like VanderLey, Anderson began to slide through the field. Pollard and VanderLey got past on lap 13 to move into third and fourth. Up front, Grill and Ruble were running nose to tail. Grill led Ruble, Pollard, VanderLey, and Brandon Odom to the halfway point. With the race going green from lap 37 to lap 75, Grill was able to gain a slight advantage over Ruble. That lead was erased on lap 75 when TJ Reaid spun on the front stretch. However, after the green came back out, Grill again eased away from Ruble.
Grill led Ruble across the stripe by 1.351 seconds and headed to Victory Lane to celebrate. After celebrating, Grill headed to post race inspection. Grill’s car failed the inspection due to a carburetor spacer infraction. The winner’s trophy was passed to Ruble. Pollard, who had already clinched the Viper Series title, finished second. VanderLey was third, followed by Odom and Reaid.
In the Modified Feature, Heath Mills came from the fifth starting spot to take the win. Lance Blacker grabbed the early lead from the outside pole. Mills quickly moved up from the fifth spot, moving into third on lap two. Two laps later, Mills moved into second, but was already seven car lengths behind Blacker. Mills caught Blacker on lap ten and pulled even on lap eleven. Mills completed the pass on the next lap. Ryan Redmon got past Blacker after the restart, but Mills was able to ease away from Redmon to collect the win. Blacker settled for third with Mike Daniels fourth and Lester Ingram fifth.
Jason Singletary got inside of Billy Maxie on a lap 5 restart and went on to win the Roadrunner Feature. Mike Wolfe led the first lap with Chris Yeakos leading the second. Yeakos slipped coming out of turn four allowing Maxie to garb the lead on lap three. Maxie led two laps before the only caution of the race fell. On the restart, Singletary was able to get his nose under Maxie and pulled even in turn one. Maxie got loose in turn two and Singletary completed the pass going down the back stretch. Once out front, Singletary was able to maintain a two car length lead the rest of the way. Yeakos finished third with Wolfe fourth. David Daniels was credited with fifth.
Travis Slawson took the win in the Coyote Feature. Michael Smith and Slawson had a tight battle for the early lead with Smith gaining the advantage at the stripe each lap. Slawson slid up the track on lap four, letting Max Nelson to slip into second place. Slawson worked his way back around Nelson on lap 16. Three laps later, Slawson used the outside line to take the lead from Smith. Slawson then pulled away from the field to take the win. Smith held off a late charge by Lee Rogers to finish second. Nelson was fourth and Joey Locklar fifth.
Jack Whittle took the lead on the third lap and went on to win the CupLite Feature. Gary Anderson led the first lap with Karl Williams leading lap two. Whittle took the lead just before it started raining, bringing the race to a halt. After the rain cleared out, Whittle and Waylon Spivey checked out to settle things between themselves. Whittle was able to gain a slight advantage over Spivey and beat him to the line by three car lengths. Greg Adams and Zak Wallace had a great battle for third with Adams holding off Wallace for the position. Chase Berry rounded out the top five.
