Pollard Can’t Be Stopped at SAS

KINSTON, AL -- It doesn’t seem anything can stop Bubba Pollard’s waltz through South Alabama Speedway’s Viper Series schedule. In last month’s race, Pollard came back from a loose plug wire to collect the win. In Saturday night’s Copperhead 100, Pollard overcame a broken oil line, a late race spin, and stiff competition from Brandon Odom and Korey Ruble to collect his sixth straight Viper Series win.

Heavy rains in the area the area took its toll on the car count as only eight cars made the trip to South Alabama Speedway. Ruble led the way in qualifying, turning a lap of 15.574 seconds, just .017 faster than Pollard. Ruble kept the pole position by drawing a one in the inversion draw. Taylor Satterfield started from the outside pole with Odom third and Pollard fourth. Ruble took the early lead with Satterfield and Pollard behind him. Ruble eased away from Satterfield and Pollard and appeared set to break Pollard’s streak.

Once again, the bad luck bug bit Satterfield as he retired from the race on lap 33 with mechanical problems. Pollard took over second and began to reel in Ruble. When Pollard caught Ruble, the battle was on. The pair traded paint several times as the race wound down. With ten laps to go, Pollard’s Impala began to trail smoke. With eight laps to go, Pollard muscled his way past Ruble to grab the lead, but by then, the smoke was too much and the yellow flew due to the oil on the track.

Pollard went to the pits for repairs as the race was red flagged so the track could be cleaned up. With the race inside of ten laps to go, Pollard was able to line third behind the lead lap cars of Ruble and Odom. On the restart, Ruble got a good jump on Odom and broke out to a four car length lead. Pollard was able to get past Odom for second. With some cars slipping in the turns, and the lap times slower, track officials decided there was still some oil on the track and brought the caution out again, erasing Rubles lead.

When racing resumed, Pollard was all over Ruble. Once again, paint was swapped as the pair leaned on each other. As they headed into turn three with three laps to go, the contact was too heavy and Ruble and Pollard went around, giving Odom the lead. Once again, Ruble and Pollard were able to line up behind Odom and set up a three lap shootout.

When the green flew, Ruble moved to the outside of Odom. Pollard closed the hole behind Odom to keep Ruble to the outside. Pollard was able to work his way past Odom to grab the lead. However, Odom and Ruble weren’t finished and battled Pollard to the end. Pollard maintained his line and kept Odom and Ruble behind him as the checkers fell. Devan Hall, making his first start at South Alabama finished fourth with Scotty Anderson fifth.

Jason Singletary took home another winner’s trophy in the Roadrunner Feature. Doug Powell led the first alp before Cody Weaver took over the lead for two laps. Chad Roberts took the lead on lap four. Meanwhile, Singletary was making his way through the field, moving into second on lap five. Singletary moved past Roberts on lap eight to take the lead. Roberts stayed close to Singletary the rest of the way, but couldn’t make another bid for the top spot. Singletary beat Roberts to the line by a car length to take the win. Chris Yeakos came from the ninth starting spot to finish third. Powell was fourth, followed by Weaver.

Jeremy Peacock led only one lap in the Mini Sportsman Feature, but it was the one that counted. Jeremy Geddings led the first lap but spun after contact with Jason Cannon, giving the lead to Austin Enfinger. Enfinger led for five laps before getting together with Eddy Hinson and spinning. Both were sent to the rear giving the lead to Karen Williams. Williams was enjoying the lead when the yellow flew with four laps to go, bunching the field. Peacock was running fourth when the green flew, but made his way past Mike Wolfe for second with four laps to go. Coming out of four to the checkers, Peacock dove to the inside of Williams and beat Willaims to the line by less than a foot. Hinson came back to finish third with Geddings fourth and Wolfe fifth.

Heavy rains moved back in as the Modified division was talking the track and washed out that feature along with the Coyote Feature. Next week will be Kid’s Night at the track. Kid’s 12 and under will be admitted free and will also get a free hot dog, drink, and a checkered flag to be autographed at intermission by the local drivers.
