Kimmel Breaks ARCA Drought With Pocono Pole
Though Frank Kimmel has started 34 ARCA Racing Series races since his last visit to victory lane, he's gone even longer without winning The Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell. This afternoon at Pocono (PA) Raceway, the nine-time series champion obliterated one of those droughts in classic fashion.
Kimmel completed his qualifying lap on the 2.5-mile Pocono triangle in just 54.108 seconds (166.334 mph) Friday afternoon to secure the first starting position for tomorrow's Weis Markets 125.
"It was an important pole for us," said the nine-time series champion. "We hadn't had a pole in a couple years, but the car was running really well in practice and I felt like I had a good opportunity to do it so it was just a matter of me going out, getting up on the wheel, and getting the job done."
Mikey Kile took the outside front-row spot with a time of 54.221-seconds.
The Weis Markets 150 goes green Saturday, July 31 at 3PM ET, and can be seen live on SPEED.

Hamner Headed to Wisconisn International on August 03
Josh Hamner has already run some of the biggest races in the Super Late Model world in his young career. From the Snowball Derby to SpeedFest to The All-American 400, Hamner has been a part of all the major events in the Southeast. Now, Hamner will try one of the bigger shows in the Midwest, as he will race this coming Tuesday in the Dixieland 150 at Wisconsin International Raceway. He will drive for one of the region’s best-known teams in the event: 5K Motorsports.
“I am really looking forward to going up there to race for Ken Wills and the 5K Motorsports team,” said Hamner. “It’s going to be different to race with all those guys up there, but at the same time we hope it will be a little bit cooler than what we have in Alabama. I am excited for the opportunity and hope we can have a good finish.”
The Dixieland 150 has had tons of historic winners from Dick Trickle to Butch Miller, Joe Shear and Rich Bickle. Those guys have paved the foundation for the current stars of the Midwest: Steve Carlson, Ross Kenseth, Chris Wimmer, Dan Fredrickson, Nathan Haseleu and more.
“There are a lot of good racers that run that series and the guys who have won this race in the past are a list of who’s who in short track racing. I have run with a few of the ASA Midwest guys in the past, but now we’ll get the chance to race them all in their own backyard.”
The Dixieland 150 will be on Tuesday, August 03, with practice beginning just after 1PM Central Time. Racing starts at 7PM Central Time.

Tech Issues Continue to Heat Up Discussions
Sunoco Gulf Coast Championship Chief Technical Inspector Ricky Brooks was a guest on In the Groove on BlabTV.com tonight. Brooks, as expected, took heat for his portion of the recent string of top-three drivers being disqualified in post-race tech.
Rumors have been swirling among fans that Augie Grill gained horsepower by replacing his disqualified cylinder heads with a set that Brooks deems legal for competition. Brooks responded to those rumors, calling them outright lies.
"You can tell that to Pinocchio," said Brooks of the claim. "Did Augie [cheat]? No. He's a chassis builder. His engine builder did it. And if [the engine builder] was half the man Jeff Hamner was he'd fess up to his mistakes."
Brooks was referring to the recent CRA Super Series disqualification, in which TJ Reaid was tossed from a second-place finish at Gresham Motorsports (GA) Park. Kyle Busch Motorsports - which owns Reaid's disqualified car - issued a press release stating that they checked their own engine compression after returning to their shop, and found results even further over the legal limit than tech inspectors found. They went on to put the blame on Jeff Hamner of Hamner Racing Engines, and Hamner concurred. Hamner offered an apology to fans and to KBM and Reaid, as well as the sponsors.

Sommerville Apologizes to Fans, Unhappy with Series
Lonnie Sommerville was quite disgusted with CARQUEST maritime Pro Stock Tour officials after a recent event at Speedway 660 in Canada. The 100-lap race included 17 cautions. Sommerville was sent to the rear of the field twice by post-incident penalties.
“I want to first off apologize to all the race fans that had to suffer through that sorry excuse of a race," said a displeased Sommerville. "It’s embarrassing to be a part of a show like that because the reason we are able to race is because of the fans and they deserve a good show. There’s really not much to say about the race tonight or the calls made out there that would be too beneficial for myself or my race team so I’m going to have to pull a Kyle Busch here and refuse to comment about the situation. The people who were in attendance saw everything they needed to tonight to form their own opinion they don’t need to hear mine.”
Sommerville won the race.

Another Night, Another DQ
Tyler Speer crossed the finish line in third position Saturday in The Red Top Auto Auction Super Six Series 100 at Lanier National (GA) Speedway. However, post-race technical inspecton did not go as well for the Woodstock, Georgia driver.
Speer was disqualified by series officals for an illegal carburetor booster kit.
The DQ adds to a popular top story for most motorsports media outlets, "water cooler discussions" among fans, and racing-related talk radio programs, as it makes four in as many weeks across the racing scene. Each DQ came from a different chief technical inspector in a different series at a different track.

Formosa and Others Fear Demise of Fairgrounds Speedway-Nashville
Tony Formosa has operated Fairgrounds Speedway-Nashville (TN) this racing season with what appears to be some moderate success. However, he told The Tennessean on Sunday that he is just as unsure about the 5/8-mile speedway's future now as he was when he inked the deal in March 2010 to operate the facility.
Also weighing in with uncertainty and fear that such a closing of the venue would negatively impact racing as a whole were Bobby Hamilton, Jr., Dillon Oliver, and Martin Pierce, who promotes a small track in Huntsville, AL: Huntsville Speedway.

Lee Fields Memorial 150 Procedure Changes
The annual Lee Fields Memorial 100 at Mobile (AL) International Speedway will become The Lee Fields Memorial 150 on September 03 - 04, 2010.
The prestigious event will gain more than 50 extra laps; it will gain an extra day. In the past, the race was preceded on Friday by a 100-lap Pro Late Model event at Five Flags (FL) Speedway. This year it will stand alone as a Friday - Saturday event, and there will be no Deep South Triple Header - a bonus offered last season for the highest average finisher of the Mobile and Five Flags races, plus South Alabama Speedway's annual Alabama 200.
Yet another change will be the addition of a competition caution at lap 75. The procedures for the caution will be those used in The Sunoco Gulf Coast Championship Series. Teams will have five minutes on pit road without losing position to make any necessary adjustments and tire changes. A maximum of six new tires will be allowed for qualifying and racing combined.
The most pleasing announcement concerning race teams is the payout. The Lee Fields Memorial winner will earn a $4,000 check, plus any bonuses or contingencies that may be applied.
Bubba Pollard swept the Five Flags / Mobile weekend in 2009, with Chris Davidson taking The Alabama 200.
You can log on to www.mobilespeedway.net 24 hours per day for more information on The Lee Fields Memorial 150, and check the Z3Sports.com archives for live Z3 Radio and Virtual Ticket broadcasts of all three 2009 events.
